Jessica tried not to look her age, though her friends assured her nobody would be suspicious. Her ID showed nineteen, but she was three years younger. Everybody else in their group was really at least eighteen.
She’d been planning this night for six months, and had jumped through enough hoops to make it happen that the stress had delayed her period. She was determined to see Monica Raven in concert and nothing was going to stop her.
It was a small, unwired gig and the crowd at the area’s hottest club was unusual, her friends said. Cindy said it was usually a college crowd. Lexie passed her a drink and Jessica looked at it hesitantly. ‘What is it?’ she wondered.
“Blue ball special,” she thought she heard. Indeed, it was blue, and had two olives in it.
The club mix was loud and the concert didn’t start for another twenty minutes. She looked around in wonder at this forbidden world. The atmosphere was like a sexual war zone. Lights flashed or glowed dimly in the darkness, and music pounded to a beat that sounded like fucking, even to a virgin’s ears.
I stuck my head over the edge of my bed to see my twin brother Ritchie lying on the floor of my bedroom. He'd be sleeping here with me until Aunt Marge and Uncle Bert went home after Christmas.
"Ritchie," I whispered, "It's ok if you want to sleep up here with me."
"Oh God thanks Stephanie." He said scampering up into bed. With the doors closed my room got incredibly cold in the winter, especially on the floor. Mom said since we were both thirteen we couldn't sleep in the same bed, but I knew Ritchie would get sick sleeping down there. I didn't mind sharing my bed with him. We got along better than most brothers and sisters we knew, maybe it was because we were twins and growing up we'd always developed the same interests. I snuggled up against him to help him warm up.
"Thanks Stephanie," he said, still shivering, "You're a lifesaver."
"No problem. Just get down in the morning before Mom comes in."
Neither one of us was really sleepy so we decided to talk for a while. My room was in the basement and all the other rooms were on the upper story, so we didn't need to worry about anyone hearing us. As we talked, I realized how weird it was to be lying here like this chatting about school. I laughed at the thought.
"What's so funny?" He asked.
I remember that hot August day. It was my sixteenth birthday and I was so ready to have fun. I had all my day planned out. I was going to spend some time with the family first and then go out at night with my best friend Jill who was sixteen and already had her drivers license.
I woke up about 8am that day. It was a Wednesday, and I was ready for my family to give me a birthday hug. I went to go take a cold shower first and got dressed. I deciced to wear my red halter top and white shorts with my cute brown slip on sandals to complete the look. It was only my mother, my two brothers and me of course. My father had died over six years ago. My mother was a busy woman though. She was a lawyer and worked long hours often. I would always be the one to stay home and cook for my brothers Michael and Justin.
Michael, who was 20 was the oldest. Then there was Justin who was 18 and me that just turned 16. Michael was on summer vacation and home from college. Justin had just graduated high school.
I went downstairs that morning and found my mother on the phone arguing with someone. I could hear her frustration. I knew it had to be her work. She'd originally taken this day off to be with me and bake me my favorite German chocolate cake that I loved so much. Although I just felt that she was going to work that day. I waited a bit after she got off the phone to walk into the living room.
My 17 year old sister Anna broke up with her jerk boyfriend Brad and she was down hearted. Mom wanted me help lift her spirits and take Anna to a party with my new friends; I was reluctant. When they had first argued over their GPA's it had just been for fun then his sister taunted him about her being smarter and Mark caved in and agreed to the bet. Mark had at first been hesitant to agree with his sister because she was so damned smart but when she had said that she would do 'anything' he wanted, assuming he won of course, he had smiled and then agreed and they sat down and hammered out the details. Mark still remembered the conversation like it was yesterday although it had been almost nine months ago...
